HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS
We realize this is nothing new, but we though we would post a friendly reminder anyway!AAA Encourages Advance Planning -Keep Halloween Bashes From Turning Into Crashes
Hamden, CT This Halloween, make sure that the things that go bump in the night arent people getting hit by cars, says AAA CT Motor Club. As one of the most festive nights of the year for children, this years weekend holiday will bring out spooky vampires, giggling princesses and favorite superheroes onto neighborhood streets. In fact, an estimated 93% of American children will be trick or treating, according to the National Confectioners Association; while one of three adults between 18-24 plans to attend or throw a Halloween Party on October 31, reports the National Retail Federation. As a result, theres a great potential for an increase in motor vehicle/pedestrian accidents when a large number of adult partygoers are on the road the same night as trick or treaters are. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate the number of motor vehicle fatalities rises an average of 40% when October 31 falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday compared to other days of the week. With that in mind, AAA Connecticut Motor Club suggests partygoers and trick or treaters to reduce their risk of being involved in a motor vehicle crash by doing advanced planning.
Trick-or-Treaters & Parents
Wear highly visible, bright reflective costumes that are easy to see in darkness. Add reflective tape and carry flashlights to increase visibility.
Review safety rules with children, including traffic safety rules: cross at crosswalks, avoid walking between parked cars; and walk facing traffic on roads without sidewalks.
Plan a trick-or-treating route and supervision in advance. Avoid areas with heavy vehicle traffic and look for well-lit streets with sidewalks. Arrange for an adult or a responsible teen to accompany younger trick-or-treaters.
Get a flashlight with fresh batteries. A flashlight helps trick-or-treaters see and be seen.
Partygoers - Have safe transportation options ready. If youre intending to consume alcohol, make plans to get home safely by selecting a designated drive or making sure cab service is available from a party location.
Consider an overnight stay. If attending a party at a friends home, consider asking to stay overnight.
Plan your travel route carefully. Try to avoid cutting through residential areas that will likely have a large number of trick-or-treaters. Watch your speed! Slow down; drive five miles per hour slower than the posted speed limit.
When driving, broaden you scan. Look into yards and on front porches, not just to the sidewalk. Children will be coming from everywhere.
Use your headlights beginning at dusk to make yourself more visible.

REACH OUT TO HELP A LOCAL WOMAN
On January 8th of this year, Allison Cabezas and her husband Marc welcomed baby Lucy to their growing family that already included 18 month old Nathaniel. Just five days later little Lucy died of SIDS, leaving the Cabezas family tormented by incomprehensible grief. Allison was unable to return to her job as a 1st grade teacher, adding financial stress to a family already struggling with the immense grief of losing a child. In July Allison announced she was expecting their 3rd child due in March 09. Allison and Marc were overjoyed by this news. But on the morning of September 14th, the excitement of this new life was dulled and Allison's world was once again shattered when she awoke to discover her husband Marc had died suddenly in his sleep. Allison is now, at 30 years old, a widow and single mother of a toddler with a new baby girl due in just a few months.Unfortunately, Allisons husband died without any life insurance, any means to provide for the future of Allison, Nathaniel, or the baby about to be welcomed into this world. She will return to work the week following her husbands death because she has to provide a life for her son and her unborn baby. Allison has not yet paid all of her daughter's burial expenses, and now she must fund her husband's funeral.
To help, Allisons friends are hosting a benefit ziti dinner for Allison on November 14, 2008 at The Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Bridgeport in Stratford, CT. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 each, $8 for children and seniors. The benefit dinner starts at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served continuously until 7:30 p.m.
